Viva Energy Online Shop

E-Commerce & Catalogue . API Integrations & Feeds . Content Management System

Viva Energy are a major supplier of transport and energy products in Australia. As Macro Distributor for the Shell Oils & Lubricants brand, they needed an initial MVP solution that could not only scale to fully-featured- but also comply with the strictest security protocols out of the gate.

Fresh from an initial attempt with a subscription based provider, Viva Energy required a more custom solution that could be fine tuned to withstand a high level of security scrutiny, performs well- handling unique distribution and business rules.

The brief

Design and develop an e-Commerce solution to test the market reception for online (volume) purchasing of oils and lubricants.

An existing data source was to form the baseline product content layer (via sync) with the potential to add fields with supplementary marketing and e-Retail content.

Built using the robust suite of Microsoft products, our modular approach to feature development ensured a speedy technical build together with requirements specific to Viva Energy:

  • Post Code lookup determining both availability to purchase and attribution of distribution centre.
  • Comprehensive promotion, incentive and discounting module.
  • Content management hub to enable raw product data to be supplemented with additional marketing content.
  • Advanced product taxonomy. Triggering required cartage, modifying the shipping cost automatically and notifying the customer at cheeckout. Additionally, the additional categorisation created filtering abilities for more fluid product grouping displays.

API Integrations

With a product data source already established and a preferred Australian-based merchant services provider in place, our flexible dev stack combined with a technical ability to 'talk to' most systems ensured a painless experience for Viva Energy's marketing and technical teams.

Design & UX

Our overall approach was to deliver a look (UI) and feel (UX) of a fully fledged e-Retail experience, even though the site is officially an MVP (Minimum Viable Product).

With the level of product offering being relatively limited and the target market being SME workshop or retail, we created industry-based navigation in addition to categories. Not only did this 'pad out' the UI it was functional, with one-click views for customers to browse the catalogue by their specific sector.

Brand Considerations

With not one, but two corporate brand guidelines to work within, our design approach was pared back- using a light canvas and visual creatives limited to banner and promotional assets only. Applying theming over the this using the Viva Energy design system from their parent site ensured the site was brand consistent and also had no risk of contravening Shell Oils own brand standards.
